Chapter Ten: Bivir

I struggle to walk as the Qorcin lead me into the woods and I fear for my life. They are known to be cruel, to only think of what they can gain. They will switch sides as quickly as shoot you through the skull. I wonder if I will ever see Danika again and my heart aches with the notion of dying before tasting her once more, of touching her smooth skin and of feeling the warmth of her next to me.

We have walked a great distance now, or it feels that way as I struggle through my pain and I begin to worry about other things. Where are they taking me? What is happening to the others while I am gone?

There are only three Qorcin with me but that is more than enough when it comes to their brute power. However, could there be more of them? Are the others safe against them or have more arrived to take them captive as well?

“Where are you taking me,” I finally ask when it becomes apparent that we are not stopping. Was I really just abducted?

“Shut up!” one Qorcin says as he pushes me forward. I swallow hard as I am forced to steady myself and the motion pulls at my stitches.

Closing my eyes, I wonder if this might be my time to die. I may have just seen my last sunrise, seen my sister for the last time, kissed a woman for the last time. Hot grief wells behind my eyes and I try not to allow tears to escape. I need to control myself, to not show my weakness. Already they know that I will do anything to protect my sister. I don’t need them to also know that they can control me via Danika, that she is my one true weakness.

No, I need to remain silent regarding her and me.

Her safety is everything to me and the Qorcin must not have access to her. I grimace in terror at the prospect of them using Danika against me, of them brutalizing her. She has been through so much that she doesn’t need to be taken hostage once more, to be terrorized again at the hands of brutes that are far worse than the Ochek.

I beg to the universe that Marir has the good sense to flee with my group, to realize much quicker than I did that I am now a hostage, that I am being taken somewhere else and being put through, well, the universe only knew what would come next for me.

The landscape is thickening, the trees closing in and the sky is disappearing from sight. Claustrophobia is cloaking me as we continue along a path that is increasingly knotting up with exposed roots and vines that clutch at my legs as we pass. Reaching up, I swat away a branch that has clawed at my dreadlocks and get poked in the ribs by the man behind me as a result. I gasp through the shock of pain but try to walk evenly.
