Chapter Eleven

“Pumpkin, why haven’t you been over?” her father’s voice came through the phone.

Heather lay back on her mattress and sighed. It felt good to hear her father’s voice. She hated that she was going to have to lie about her situation, but for the moment, it was for the best.

“I’ve been swamped with work,” she fibbed.

“Too busy for your parents, huh?” Terry Wright laughed.

Heather rolled her eyes at her father. It wasn’t like he and her mother, Laura, just sat around pondering over their children. The minute she and her sister, Reese, had moved out, the two of them began traveling the world.

Terry and Laura Wright were enjoying life at the moment.

“Dad, you know that is not the case,” she grumbled. She stripped off her clothes and reached inside the dresser, pulling out her fresh jammies. “I’m just in the way when I come over there.”

“Don’t you start that. You know you and your sister are always welcome over here.”

“Yeah, to house sit.” She snickered. Heather slid on her shorts before falling back on her bed. She snagged her shirt and rested it along her chest.

“I promised—”

“I know, Dad. I’m just messing with you.” She chuckled to put him out of his misery. “You and Mom are supposed to be traveling.”

“So what’s up, pumpkin? I doubt you’re calling just to talk with your dear ol’ dad.”

It always amazed her how he could read right through her. She sighed and shifted the phone to her other ear. She glanced over at the window. The moon’s rays filtered into the room.

“Dad, I was wondering…” She paused, unsure of how she was going to approach the subject. She decided to just rip the Band-Aid off and get straight to the point. “Do you know where to find silver bullets?”

The line went silent.

Heather pushed up from the bed and sat up, folding her legs in front of her.

“Dad?”

“I’m here. What the hell you need silver bullets for?” he asked. The joking was gone from his voice. This was no longer her jovial father who loved to crack bad jokes. In his place was the military man who was very protective of his family.

“There was a robbery near my house. There was rumor that there was a rogue shifter involved, and I wanted to have some type of ammunition for shifters just in case.” She paused, unsure if he was buying her fib.

She did want to buy them for extra protection against rogue wolves.

She was going to leave out the little bit of information about the kidnap attempt.

“Are you coming here to pick up a weapon?” he asked.

“Yeah, I might. I was just thinking of doing this for an extra bit of security.”

“That makes sense. I know you can handle yourself with a Glock. Stop by the house, and I’ll outfit you real nice.”

Heather grinned. She knew she could count on her father. Now she’d just have to find a way to get over to her parents’ without Robin knowing. Not that she wanted to hide anything from her, but she didn’t want Robin anywhere near the silver.
