Preston

My heart lodges in my throat as my palms start to sweat. My wolf paces back and forth. Ready to get on with whatever it is we’re waiting for. Three alphas in the room. Three phones. Three separate pings announcing an incoming message all at the same time. It can only mean one thing. The Council has made their decision.

They each open their messages. But Jack is the one to deliver the news. His words making this moment real.

Yes! I squeeze my eyes closed to comprehend what I’m hearing. Cassia and I will be mated.

Whoosh. Cassia slams into me. Ecstatic at hearing that we can be mated.

I wrap my arms around her. Holding her close. Whispering in her ear. “You and me, Cassia. One more day.”

She’s holding me tight. But something in her demeanor is off. It’s not her quietness that has me concerned. Yes. She is happy. But I’m also sensing more anxiety than I would expect. And it’s mixed with a little fear.

Where is the fear coming from? Is she afraid of me?

I hold her against me. Wanting her to feel my heart. My love for her growing stronger.

I know that I’m a bit of a hard-ass. Say it like it is. Nothing sugar-coated. A go in and take care of business attitude. And yes. My view toward fucking women is pretty much the same. Get it done quick. Walk away happy.

Shit.

Now, I’m nervous. Cassia isn’t some random fuck. She’s my mate. Since I met her, I’ve been excited about the mating part of all of this. Finally getting to experience this phenomenal out-of-this-world orgasm everyone keeps talking about. Only focusing on the fucking. And when we’re going to get to it.

I just said it to myself in my head. I want Cassia to feel my love for her. Holy shit. I think I’m feeling it for the first time myself. A warm sensation surrounding my heart. Making me whole. Connecting me to the other half of my soul. To her.

I’m in love.

This changes everything.

Our mating has to be…what? Special? No. That’s not right. It has to be more than just special. It has to be perfect. No quick and dirty fucks here. I can’t believe what’s bouncing around in my head. But I want to make love to my mate.

This is a first for me.

I want to take my time. Slow and lingering. Savor every second. Complete the mating bond. Completely. Which means that she has to enjoy it too.

I need to find out what she’s afraid of.

Cassia pulls away. Reminding me that we have a meeting to attend.

We leave the room with a plan to catch up with everyone later. Cassia still hasn’t said anything. And this festival is starting to interfere with my mating.

A meeting now. Followed by the social this afternoon. The awards ceremony is in the morning. And the hotel has asked that festival guests check out before the ceremony. The council wants us to wait until tomorrow to mate, though. That means we won’t have a chance to be alone together until after we get back to the pack house.
