Chapter Seventeen

The Crash site

We dusted off a quarter after eleven, taking a few rifles from the base’s armory. Liz plotted us a route to the chalet that stayed far away from any city with a population greater than ten thousand. Before we left, I caught a few more snippets of news. From every credible report, those demonic fucks had done one hell of a job when it came to their blitzkrieg campaign. The good news, if there was any, was that the surviving militaries across the globe had managed to mobilize and not only were frontlines slowly being formed but safe havens as well.

Maybe we stood a chance after all.

And a chance was all I needed.

As Liz flew, I sat in the copilot seat, keeping a sharp eye out for anything and everything demon related that might be on the ground while Sophie and Amber sat in the back and carried on a quiet conversation I wasn’t privy to. Kate had informed me right before we left that she expected to be done analyzing all her data on our encounter in an hour or two, but other than that brief update, she’d remained quiet since fucking my brains out.

Not sure if that was good or bad. I could see it going either way.

After forty minutes of flight time, I figured we were far enough away from our base of operations that I could put in a call to Colonel Sullivan on the radio. He was the second-to-last person I’d spoken to the night before during our egress from the facility and was the current commanding officer of the 2nd Infantry Brigade, 28th Infantry Division there in Pennsylvania.

When I’d first called, I didn’t think I’d be patched through to him. There had been a lot of shit going on, and as I’d come to find out from him almost immediately, a lot of fuckheads had been saying a lot of shit about a situation they had no idea about.

I guess Armageddon brought those types out of the woodwork.

Thankfully, we’d talked as much as we could, and I’d promised to give him a personal update on things the next morning when I knew more. That was precisely why I got him on the horn again at that moment.

“What do you have for me, Captain?” he asked, his voice both rough and weary. I doubted he’d even thought about sleep since we spoke last.

“We’re on our way to pick up Tau Nine’s research lead, a doctor Natsuki Kanda,” I said. “We think she’s at her chalet. Once that’s complete, we’re going back to the facility to get into the vault.”

“I’m assuming then there’s something highly valuable in there?”

“Yes, sir,” I said. “Prototypes and artifacts for one, but most importantly, there’s a treasure trove of intel on these invaders we can get. Or rather, there’s a treasure trove of intel I can unlock that we can then disseminate to forces all across the globe once I have this nanogel stored inside the vault.”

“Not sure I follow all of that, but I do understand the endgame of your little venture,” he said.
