Ember and George chatted for a while. Mostly, they kept things light. George seemed politely curious about Cauchemar, the pub, and so forth. They carefully skirted the topic of the murder, since George seemed more than happy ignoring it and Ember didn’t want to seem overeager and push the grieving brother into icing her out.

When he saw her out the door, he thanked her warmly for the shepherd’s pie and the visit.

She took the long way home on foot, to give herself a chance to mull everything she’d just learned over. It was time she started to think clearly about how George fit into this whole picture.

Over the years, Ember had learned to trust her own intuition. Her magic wasn’t uniquely powerful, but it was an inextricable part of who she was and how she experienced the world. And sometimes, if she could quiet her racing thoughts, she could get her magic to tell her things.

Like how she felt about George Tanner.

The largest impression she’d gotten off the man was that he seemed to be genuinely distraught about his brother’s death. It was clear that, when he’d said he was alone in the world now, that wasn’t a state he’d intentionally sought or desired.

However, it was also undeniably true that he was the person with the most to gain from Matthew Tanner’s death.

All the world-renowned surgeon’s wealth now belonged to George. Sure, George had been well off to begin with, but what wealthy person didn’t innately seek more money, even in ruthless ways?

And if his brother’s death made him unhappy, well… maybe that was a consequence George had been willing to accept.

After all, for some people, money did buy happiness.
