Chapter Ten

Instead of releasing her as she expected, he twirled them so her back landed against the wall. He pinned her there, his gaze raking her face before he shut his eyes and angled his head to the side. As he drew in a sharp breath, he pushed away.

“Our situation is dangerous enough. I am to sleep on this floor, a mere stage above your bedchambers. I hadn’t counted upon the torture proximity would create.”

Phoebe nodded. Her blood understood. It pounded and lit a crescendo. She wished to do all sorts of inappropriate things, like kiss him some more, or draw him back against her. She was uncomfortable in places she usually didn’t notice.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Pressing his lips together, he switched off the lamp and placed it inside the frame before shutting the attic door. She took a few steps into the hardier afternoon light slipping between the folds of drapery. The room lay at the furthest end of the servant’s quarters, just above the back stairs so as to be readily accessed by either family or staff. Samantha had already fled, leaving them alone.

Very alone. The room hadn’t been used in a while. None of them were fond of the needle and thread. The furniture was covered by white dust sheeting. The pieces hovered in the afternoon gloaming. Desk. Dresser. Two overstuffed chairs and a small table.

In the far corner, a narrow bed beckoned, left over from when the room had functioned as an additional guest chamber. She bit her lip. “Seb…”

“I made a promise, Phoebe.”

She revolved into him again, smiling, her body moving like mist against his. She wrapped her hand around the back of his neck as he had earlier done to her and drew his lips towards her. “And yet…”

He resisted for a moment, and then groaned. “If you seduce me, you’ll have to marry me. We won’t know if we suit. This will destroy all my best intentions.”

It seemed a small price to pay. She might normally resist marriage, but he had promised her the world. Perhaps being wed wouldn’t be the prison she once had imagined. Perhaps it would be far more exciting to have a man capable of giving such kisses.

She spread her hands against the width of his hard chest and explored the strength of him. The button at his collar came easily undone under her searching fingers, the next one slipping equally as quickly from its hole. With his skin exposed, she laid her lips upon his warm flesh.

He groaned and ripped her from him, his hands upon her shoulders as he panted. “Phoebe, we mustn’t. You must leave now, before I lose control of my intentions.”

In response she melted toward him once again. The strength in his arms seemed to give way before he drew her taut to his length. He lifted her skirts, buried his hands beneath them, and growled.

“Ridiculous fashion. Here.” He pulled her toward the sheet-draped bed and kissed her once more.

The floor gave way as she fell to the mattress.
