“Drayton. Your actions today at the zoo were by far inexcusable. You ruined my grandson’s day. You are a dad, so you need to act like one—a decent and respectable one,” Miriam said, as she held Layton has he slept soundly in her arms, and after everything that went on today, I’d hoped that he would’ve been sleeping this good.

“Sorry, Mom,” Dray replied with his head down as we sat on the couch next to each other. Mayson and Lulu sat on another couch, and Miriam and Clayton sat in chairs facing us. We were all in our family room.

“Son, you know you can’t act this way in public just because of what someone said about you,” Clayton said.

“Sorry, Dad, but this was personal. He made a remark about me being a bad dad. I don’t play that shit. Anyone can say what they want about me or whatever, but don’t make personal remarks about what kind of a dad I am; that I won’t stand for,” Dray said.

“But you have to learn how to deal with it. You do have a child out of wedlock and you need to come up with a settlement so she can be out of your life. I think this woman is stalking the two of you,” Clayton said.

“You think?” I blurted out. “This chick shows up at two different places that we’ve been at, and it is no coincidence. She even dresses like me and wears her hair like mine. This is crazy.”

“She does want to be you, Evelyn,” Miriam informed me. “Every woman out there wanted to be a Royce wife at some point in her life, but there are only three of us.”

“But none of these women have a child by one of the Royce men, but now one does and it’s her. Something is seriously wrong with that woman,” I said.

“I think so, too,” Miriam agreed. She looked at Dray. “Drayton. Like your dad said, you need to reach a child support settlement with this woman so you and Evelyn can move on from this. This is not fair to Evelyn or Layton. I don’t want my grandson growing up with all of this drama.”

Too late, I thought. I looked at Dray.

“I know, Mom,” Dray replied. He clasped his hands together as his elbows rested on his thighs. He sighed as his head hung low. “I’ve never fucked up like this. I guess that dude just pushed me to the edge, but I didn’t go over because if I did he would’ve gotten his ass beat, but I also think about being sued as well because if I would’ve touched him I would’ve been. I know you all saw on video proof that I didn’t hit him, but he sure took a swing at me.”

“And that will be the last time you act like a heathen in public,” Miriam warned him. “You are a Royce. You know we don’t lose it no matter how mad someone makes us.”

“I know, Mom,” he said once again.
