Chapter 15

Cyrus watched the van speed away and unleashed every curse word he’d ever learned. Bending down to pick up the crutch that had fallen to the ground, he strived to keep calm, although fear laced every cell in his frame. There was only one objective in his world now: finding Claire. Heading back toward the main entrance of the library, he decided he’d start by retracing her steps.

As he was about to ascend the steps to the front door, an ambulance pulled up in front of the large building, siren blaring. Not wanting to be discovered, Cyrus ducked behind the corner.

Paramedics pulled a backboard and jump bag from the vehicle and ran inside. Next, a police car arrived, parking behind the ambulance. Cyrus observed two uniformed cops walk up the stairs and into the library. A few minutes later, the paramedics exited, carrying what looked to be an unconscious man. They pulled a stretcher from the ambulance, placed him on it, and lifted the man inside. Curious, Cyrus moved closer.

“Everything okay in the library?” he asked one of the cops who’d followed the paramedics out.

“Everything’s fine, sir,” he said with a nod. “Please step away from the scene.” The cop gestured toward the unconscious man being loaded into the ambulance.

Cyrus almost felt his eyes pop from his head when he recognized the man dressed in black he’d seen the other day. As the wheels in his mind churned, he understood this was no coincidence. The man must have something to do with Claire’s kidnapping.

“They’ll take him to the closest hospital?” Cyrus asked the cop.

“Yes, sir. To MedStar Washington Hospital. I appreciate your concern, but we’re trying to keep the sidewalk clear until the ambulance departs.”

“No problem,” Cyrus said, armed with the information he needed. He traversed two blocks and hailed a cab, directing the driver to take him to MedStar Hospital. He would make sure he knew exactly which room the man in black was assigned to. And then, they were going to have a little chat.
