Tools for Process Mapping

There are a number of vendors who make sophisticated tools for mapping and managing complex process flows within SharePoint. The high-end vendors include Global360 and K2. They create tools that can interface between SharePoint and other outside systems. Nintex makes a tool that runs inside SharePoint and integrates very well with it. Nintex is also the single most popular SharePoint add on (according to a presentation I saw by Gartner at the 2011 Microsoft SharePoint Conference). All of these tools include graphical editors that are used to capture and create workflows. Those tools are beyond the scope of this book; the tools from Global360 and K2 are incredibly powerful and complex, but if you need that level of power, they are essential. Nintex is much less complex, but within SharePoint it is very powerful. It also has a graphical way of capturing workflows and implementing them. In this section, we will look at two tools that are great for capturing and mapping the business processes with your stakeholders, but they do not implement the workflow. In many cases, you may implement manual workflows or simple SharePoint workflow automation to streamline a process.

Note In SharePoint 2010, there is a graphical version of the workflow designer that uses Visio to both create and track SharePoint workflows. I am not covering that here because it is about implementation of the workflow, and it is too limiting when you are trying to capture and document processes with your stakeholders.
