Chapter 16

Myah raised her head from where she’d rested it on the cot of a seventeen-year-old boy with a mop of curly brown hair who’d been brought in the day before, scared and high as a kite. Brady was his name, and even in a drug-induced panic, she’d seen his innocence, his fragility. She hadn’t left his side since, except when he’d been moved to a room at the insistence of a “customer.”

The voice that had awakened her sounded again, giving a whimper with a touch of hysteria. This time, it was followed by a word.

“Mom?”

Myah’s heart clenched, and she stood to find the speaker and comfort him. Boss had been right about her. She was a nurturing soul, and when someone was in pain, she couldn’t turn her back on them even though her years on the force had educated her on the true meaning of human suffering. Instead of becoming jaded, she’d channeled it into resolve to help as many as she could. But this voice tugged at her more than most.

“Mom!” the boy shouted, and she hurried through the narrow lane between cots to find him. Pulling back his curtain, which cordoned him off from the rest of the boys, she fell to her knees beside a dazed Marshall, placing a hand on his sweaty brow. She’d become accustomed to the pull of morphine, the haze it left her waking hours, and the numbness she welcomed with its spread through her system. From the first dose Boss had given her, she was regularly supplemented to keep her reality steadily altered. She could function, but was left docile and obedient. They thought her growing addiction was why she’d quit fighting them. There was no way she’d tell them their real leverage to keep her in line was Marshall, and of course, the threat to Bobbi. She was no longer graceful, no longer mentally agile, but she wasn’t a stupefied mess of skin and bone either. She also knew Boss had backed her dosage to almost prescription-strength levels once the heroin had flushed from her system. He wanted her aware enough to keep his inventory healthy. Marshall hadn’t had any such adjustment, so it took him time to come around.

“Marshall, shhh,” she soothed, planting a palm to either side of his face to calm his wriggling. He immediately stilled, and she cooed to him. “That’s right. You’re okay. I won’t let anything happen to you.”

“Mom?” he asked again, trying to focus on her.

The back of the warehouse was lit by fluorescents as shipments came in by the docks, men loading and unloading trucks full of goods. Legitimate or not, she didn’t care, but it seemed the men who stood sentry over them rotated jobs, and this one looked as if it could be legal or a front for something to appear legal. However, where the cots were located was always dark, only the light from high windows or the dock area bleeding into it. Myah had grown used to slinking around in the shadows, but Marshall couldn’t seem to figure out who she was.
