The Advantages of a Deep Voice

In any case, the chicken-and-egg question doesn’t change the power of this research. What it shows is that people sort themselves out in terms of power very quickly after they meet, within minutes and unconsciously, and they signal that power relationship to each other with their low-frequency vocal patterns.

It further shows that you can shift the pattern if you can come on strong at the end or even work on your vocal production to be powerful from the start.

By the way, this research is consistent with a study that found that, in presidential elections of the past hundred years, the deeper-voiced candidate won every time.7 Deeper voices confer an advantage, but that doesn’t mean women don’t have a shot at commanding a room. Gregory says, “In order to speak, we all have to use both the lower frequency and the higher frequency.” The basic note that we produce is called the fundamental frequency, and it’s then surrounded with both higher and lower overtones.

Gregory continues,

It’s the fundamental frequency that’s generated by the larynx. What is called the super-laryngeal vocal track, that part of our anatomy after the larynges, the pharynx, and so forth, as well as the tongue and the sinuses, and so on, gives tone to a voice. And that’s what gives a certain quality to everyone’s voice and obviously differences between male and female voices. The female voice has a higher pitch generally because the larynges are not as long. With males the larynges are longer and thus they have a lower pitch. But it really doesn’t matter when it comes to the actual speech because speech is created by the energy of the laryngeal tone. It’s after that that we put other qualities in it and that gives us a specific tonal quality.
