Chapter 17

Manny was a creature of habit. Every Sunday, as close as possible to nine o’clock in the morning, unless it was pouring, or it was winter and it was freezing cold, he would go to the Big House to meet his daughter, Susie. Together they would walk the path, chatting about this and that, on their way to Black Bottom for church service.

I was waiting outside Manny’s cabin when he came out.

“Good morning, Casey,” Manny said. “That shine you gave me worked real good. I slept like a little kid.”

“Manny, could you do me a big favor?”

“I'll try. What yo want?”

“Would you please ask Susie, if she could get a message to either Larry or Robert for me?”

“I guess I can do dat. What’s the message?”

“Ask Susie if she will ask Robert and Larry to meet me down at the creek by the Hanging Tree. Have Susie tell them if they will meet me, I have ten dollars for each for them.”

Manny’s eyes bulged and he whistled.

“Did you say ten dollars each? Where did you get that much money, Casey? And, why are you gonna give it to them?”

I had to laugh.

“I haven’t got two cents to rub together. I’m just playing a little joke on them. I want to be sure that they will come and meet me at the Hanging Tree.”

“Ten dollars each, huh? That will be enough to get them there fast. I’ll get Susie to tell them.”

“Thanks Manny. I owe you one.”

“Casey, what are you planning to do to them?”

“I can’t say. Don’t tell anyone about this. It's betwixt you and me. All right?”

“Alright Casey I won't. You be careful.”

“I will. Tell Susie that after she gives them the message that she should forget she ever heard it.”

“I'll tell her, but you got me wondering what in the world you are gonna do to those boys.”

I couldn't tell him what I planned to do.

Thanks again, Manny. You’re a good friend.”

When Alicia and I got to the Hanging Tree, I hid the two coils of rope, each with a hangman’s noose, behind the tree.

I set the jug of spiked moonshine on the ground and we sat down leaning our backs up against the trunk of the tree to wait for Robert and Larry.

We had no idea how long of a wait we had before Robert and Larry would show up, or indeed if they would come to meet me. It was all in Manny and Susie's hands now.

“Do you think they’ll come?” Alicia said.

“Your guess is as good as mine. You know how Manny is. He might forget to give my message to Susie. Robert and Larry might be off somewhere or they might not take the bait.”

“If they don’t, what we gonna do?”

“If we don’t get them this time, we’ll get them the next time.”

“They gonna come. I got a feeling,” Alicia said smiling. Her eyes were soft and full of dancing light just how I remembered them to be.

"I'm going to go to de big house and see what's happening," Alicia said and in a moment she was gone.
