I sat on the shore shivering, which is how the body warms itself up. If you swim in cold water, you get used to the feeling of your body shaking and rattling, and the shaking and rattling view as you look at the world through shivering eyes. But the idea in my head was as clear as the water I’d had it in, and I wrote it down in shaky handwriting as I shivered and waited for the wind to dry me.

The bewildering ocean, so busy and so empty at the same time, had reminded me suddenly of another busy and empty enormous place—the first place in my journey that actually seemed suspicious. The tea shop, even when closed, was a brave and unusual place, not suspicious at all, and the beekeeper seemed above reproach, a phrase which here means “too interested in uncovering the trickery of certain authors to slip poison into my honey,” and my swim in the sea, although thrilling, was not going to uncover the story behind the terrible note I had received. There was too much water in the world to try and find the poison bit, particularly if I had already swallowed it. But there has always been something sinister to me about a supermarket.

I usually bought my usual bread for my usual toast for my usual breakfast—

Tea

with honey,

a piece of toast

with cheese,

one sliced pear,

and an egg perfectly prepared,
