This creative experiment became an opportunity to demonstrate both that peer review practices must be adjusted to fit sound-based scholarship and that such adjustments do not reduce the rigour, seriousness or value of this work.

University of Michigan Press’s commitment to encouraging experimental sound-based scholarship is also evident in the work of Jacob Smith, including ESC: Sonic Adventure in the Anthropocene (2019) and Lightning Birds (2021), the latter being ‘a multi-media project that consists of a five-episode, podcast-style audiobook, a curatorial essay, and a bibliography’. Lightning Birds is a richly sound-designed project, incorporating archival radio with soundscapes to articulate an ecological understanding of the airspace that birds and radio share. In order to embed the work in relevant scholarship, Lightning Birds is accompanied by a ‘curatorial essay’ that functions as ‘liner notes’ for the project’s five episodes, as well as a lengthy bibliography; combined, these two textual supplements both establish the rigour of the project and free the audiobook itself to focus on its sonic affordances. As a scholar of sound, Smith demonstrates through his work how sound itself is capable of making arguments that exceed the written word while also satisfying the needs of scholarly communication via the scholarly apparatus of his works. In general, the experiments of University of Michigan Press in publishing sound-based scholarship within the structures of a university press demonstrate that the conventional structures of peer review can continue to be useful as long as they are updated to be appropriate to the scholarship in question, that is, that they are media adaptive.
