“I have with me at the studio CJ McLaughlin, drummer of The Neon Fishnets. How ya doin’, CJ?”

The radio DJ was nicknamed “The Boogie.” He was a big man with an even bigger voice, his thinning blond hair combed to one side.

“Doing fantastic,” CJ replied, leaning into the mic. “Thanks for having me!”

“And we also have another special guest,” Boogie continued, gesturing toward me across the table even though there was no video being recorded. “Jackie Hernandez, newest band member of The Neon Fishnets, and former bassist for The Broken Scars.” He pressed a button, and the sound of a massive audience applauding filled the air. “Thanks for being here, Jackie!”

“My pleasure,” I said.

“CJ, the band’s got a new studio album coming out soon. Tell us about it.”

As CJ launched into an animated description of our new album, I got excited about it all over again. Boogie went back and forth asking us questions about the music, the process of recording the new album, what fans could expect regarding any upcoming tours (we were mum on that—saving those details for a TV interview on our agenda). He didn’t spend too much time on Ray or the falling apart of Broken Scars, which I found refreshing. It was old news, but people loved hearing about drama, and I was glad he didn’t give into the temptation of digging up old pain for the sake of ratings.

He did, however, bring up the feud between me and Ivy.

“So, Jackie, I hear you and Ivy Finch are getting along better these days?”

I froze, my face getting hot. There was something in the way he asked it, almost as if he knew. But that was impossible, right? Unless someone had seen us at Mac’s party. Oh, God, had someone seen us?

“Uh,” I said, a frog in my throat. I reached for my bottle of water, but it was empty. I covered my mic to whisper, “Could I get some more water?”

As soon as I asked, Zack, who had joined us on today’s interview, ran me in a fresh bottle. Boogie and CJ exchanged confused glances as I chugged the water. Boogie didn’t let more than a few seconds of dead air pass, though, and played a sound clip of two cats fighting.

“I know I wasn’t the first to be surprised to hear you’d joined The Fishnets after the catfight on Twitter between the two of you, and if anyone has forgotten, I have screen shots,” he said, reading some of the old tweets as he replayed the cat fight sound clip in the background. “So imagine my surprise when I started seeing pictures of you and Ivy sharing the same studio!”

He didn’t know about the garden. There was no way anybody could have known. I needed to chill out.

“I was surprised, too,” I said, flashing a smile at him and CJ, and they visibly relaxed. “We’re getting along fine. She’s a hell of a keyboardist, and I admire her as a musician and as a person.
