IT TOOK TWO DAYS TO convert one of the embassy buildings that had street access into a small clinic. Rakesh supervised the process, splitting his time between the ersatz Arena and the new clinic, and found himself pleased with the results on both fronts. Having the Arena inside the embassy meant fewer complications for everyone involved, and there was ample space for what they needed. Despite his initial misgivings, Rakesh had to admit that Virin was right. This was a good space for the Collared.

The clinic had also turned into a good space. The front room, where Rakesh or another Collared would wait and supervise, was welcoming and comfortable. There were four rooms at the rear of the building—a small kitchen, and three examination rooms staffed by female medics. Virin and Rakesh looked over the arrangements early on the third day, and Rakesh found himself nodding and smiling.

"This is good. I don't think you can tell that the rooms are all being monitored." He turned towards Virin. "I think this will work. Thank you."

"Thank you, Kesh. If this works, it will give us a way to start making peace." He looked down at his wrist-comp and nodded. "I'm on shift in ten. Kiss me, love, and I'll see you tonight."

Rakesh moved into Virin's arms and tipped his head back. "Be careful, love."

"I'm always careful. You be careful, too." Virin pulled Rakesh close and kissed him hard, then stepped back and smoothed the non-existent wrinkles from the front of his uniform. "Now. Where did I hide the stunner?"

"Second drawer down."

"And the panic button?"

Rakesh grinned. "Underneath the seat of the chair. Go on, Kian-ti-os. You'll be late. I'll be fine."

Virin kissed him again, then hurried towards the rear of the clinic and the door that fed out into the courtyard. Rakesh went and sat down behind the desk, picking up one of the translated books and opening it. He didn't expect to see anyone today, but you never did know....
