Chapter Sixteen

I was happy Gabriel was calmer now that his sister was doing better. After what I’d gone through with Maria, I understood how complex emotions could be when you were a doctor and personally cared for someone who was sick.

Over the last few days, I’d done a lot of thinking and formed a friendship with the mature and smart Dr. Banks. She insisted that I call her Elaina, and after numerous conversations with each other, I felt like I had a true friend.

She was a world of knowledge for me, and after confiding in her that I’d grown attached to Maria, she related with her own story, and how she managed as a female doctor with over-the-top emotions. It felt good to have a woman to talk to who understood my position and situation.

We’d shared dinner together and talked about her residency years ago. I was humbled by how emotionally strong she was in a world sometimes still dominated by men. She had a good head on her shoulders, and still carried about this feminine air.

This past morning, over coffee in her office, she’d shared with me her passionate, but short-lived romance with Gabriel the previous year. It had been a shock to me, but what could I say, I hadn’t been in the picture and could claim no right to be his girlfriend.

She had been taking off her running shoes after her morning run before work, her hair tied neatly in a ponytail. “Gabriel and I were lovers. It was very exciting, and I had a hard time with it. At one time, I fancied myself in love with him.” Her hands were waving in the air as she sat back and sipped her coffee.

“He has this charismatic way about him. Gabriel says all the right things. And, I still don’t know if there is just something about those hands. It's over though, and thank God, I have a wonderful man in my life now.”

“Wow, I had no idea.”

“I know, not many people did, and the few that knew kept things quiet. I am just letting you know, just in case he starts trying to charm the pants off you. He’s very handsome and, as your mentor and boss, probably very hard to resist as a young woman. I remember my first year, I slept with Dr. Kensington in the broom closet. He had all these muscles everywhere, ugh, I still get wistful thinking about it.”

It was hard to hate her when we talked like that. She was funny, friendly, and so easy to get along with. At times, it felt fake, but I liked her. In reality, I had no one I could trust or get along with at the hospital, except for Gabriel and Luke, but now I had her.

The nurses always seemed to keep to themselves, and while they weren’t rude, they also weren’t overly friendly. It was weird, and after things changed between Gabriel and me, I was still struggling to figure out what went wrong.
