Taking a Play History

You’re going to put this book down and take 15 to 20 minutes to play with this. But—whoops!—first you need to read the rest of this page.

Identify times in your life when you remember having fun. Think about what you did as a child that really got you excited, that really gave you joy. Write those down.

Start with the earliest memories you have of playing as a kid. Note every significant detail, even the things that seem silly or irrelevant but come to mind anyway. Try to come up with three to five memories of playing. If you feel stuck, use these questions:

•Who was there?

•Where were you?

•What were you doing?

•How did you feel?

•How did you start?

•What “props” were you using?

•What was the best part?

Just put down everything you can think of without trying to decode the meaning.

Now, can you see the common theme among these activities? For instance, if one of your themes from playing as a child is being a performer in the company of others, you might enjoy taking acting classes, joining a flash mob event, or organizing your friends to participate in a local talent contest.

If, on the other hand, you have always tended to prefer playing by yourself and you are more of an explorer you might enjoy building cities with Legos (the community of adult Lego fanatics is huge!), traveling to new places on your own, or investigating problems.

When I went through this exercise years ago, a few memories emerged:

I thought of how much I loved dressing up with all the vintage

gowns in my grandmother’s dress up chest as a kid.

I thought of how much I loved acting on stage.

I thought of how I now love to dress up and have become known for the fantastic hats and fascinators I wear to conferences and events (and sometimes in my day-to-day life).

One of my prominent themes is Performer.

Here is my friend Jeff’s Play History, as he wrote it:

As I think back, here are a few of my favorite play moments: Playing with friends with toy construction equipment on a dirt pile in the back yard. We also liked playing with Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars (I had a huge collection). We would play with them daily, always taking turns picking our cars for the day. Everyone always wanted to pick the cop car to enforce the rules of our game.

My friends had a huge collection of Legos, we used to build planes and spaceships out of them.

I loved playing soccer so much so that I built my own soccer goals in our backyard when I was 12. I asked my mom to buy the materials (PVC pipe, netting, etc.). The very first shot by my friend hit the underside of the crossbar and it popped off…and then with a creaking noise, the whole goal keeled over and collapsed to one side. Back to the drawing board. This time, I had Mom get me cement and some nuts and bolts. With the goals planted into the ground, our summer days of backyard soccer began.
