Sakaarson, hear my cry.

Our enemies are strong.

They burn us with their fire.

They break us with their stones.

But though they move earth and sky against us,

You bear the very mountains on your back

That we may strike our foes.

HIROIM landed beside the Hulk and Korg at the bottom of the cliffside. He hadn’t been fast enough—he knew the rocks would hit them in an instant. But he felt his faith spreading through him like a warm fire.

“Look,” he said to the hivelings.

The Hulk and Korg groaned, digging their hands into the ground. They heaved up a massive chunk of stone, deflecting the avalanche to send the boulders tumbling down toward Denbo’s men in the valley below.

“You bear the very mountains on your back,” whispered Hiroim.

“That we may strike our foes,” echoed the hivelings.

Miek charged through the embers and falling rocks. Headman Charr turned and raised his hand cannon. Their eyes locked. In another lifetime, Charr might have had a story to tell, an explanation, maybe even an apology. But his eyes were hard and dead, as if he’d reconciled himself to whatever he thought he had to do long, long ago. He said nothing, just squeezed off two shots that flew wide. Then Miek’s spear caught him under the ribs and ripped up through his lungs to exit beneath his shoulder blade. As Charr fell, Miek hacked into him with blades from either side. And when Charr’s body hit the ground, Miek stabbed him three times more.

“Enough, Miek,” said Korg, walking toward him through the dust. “It’s over.”

“Over?” said Miek.

He turned to the Imperial soldiers who backed against the far wall of the canyon, dropping their weapons. Denbo raised his trembling hands.

“We yield!” he called.

Miek heard nothing but the rushing of blood in his ears, and smelled nothing but the stink of the Hivers the soldiers had murdered.

“Never stop making them pay,” said Miek.

Elloe laughed, high and strange, and Miek charged forward, spear leveled, his hivelings at his side. Denbo stumbled backwards, falling to the ground. Miek leaped, raising his spear high.

But the Hulk stepped forward, stretched wide his arms, and brought his hands together in a massive thunderclap that threw Miek and his hivelings backwards through the air. Miek scrambled to his feet, grabbing his fallen spear, and spun back toward Denbo. But now the Hulk stood between him and the Imperials. Elloe stared at the Hulk in fury, letting out an inchoate shout of protest. Miek charged, his spear leveled, but the Hulk didn’t even flinch. Miek’s blade sank into his chest and the handle broke off in Miek’s hands. The Hulk just stood there, massive and unmoving, as Miek hunched before him.

“Why you kik stopping me, Two-Hands?” rasped Miek.

“You should already know that, little one,” Korg said solemnly.

Miek stared at them, baffled and furious. They swore to stand with him, they shared his chem, they marched on this mission of vengeance, and now they held back and chastised him for not knowing rules he never learned? Furious and grief-stricken, Miek stared into the Hulk’s eyes.
