Chapter Thirteen
Emmaâs heart lurched as she flew into a sitting position, her bedsheets twisted all around her. She placed a hand against her chest, unsuccessfully trying to calm herself. She blinked into the dim light of early morning.
What had awakened her?
Had it been a dream?
Had someone in the house gotten up earlier than usual?
Quickly, she slid from her bed.
A bleat cut through the quiet morning. It was one of the goats. She scurried over to the window, but shoving the curtain aside didnât help much. The sun hadnât crested the horizon yet.
Gretel squawked.
Emma hurried away from the window.
Out in the hallway, she paused for only a moment. She couldnât wake the children, but should she wake Amelia? No, she decided. Amelia would be getting up soon enough. Now that she had taken over some of Rachaelâs hours at the café, she was working long days. She needed her rest while she could get it.
Besides, she reasoned, she was likely letting her imagination get the better of her. It would be embarrassing to wake her cousin for no reason.
She rushed down the stairs; moving through her house by memory, she pulled open the closet near the front door. Feeling around inside, her fingers quickly wrapped around what she was looking for.
Ezekielâs baseball bat.
She slid her feet into her worn shoes and eased the front door open.
She wasnât entirely convinced that a neâer-do-well had harmed the chickens and goats. She wanted to believe the best of people. But if someone was trespassing on her farm, it was her responsibility to figure it out.
To find out who.
She knew Levi suspected Amos, but she couldnât very well go to the bishop on a suspicion. She knew how that would turn out. She would be reprimanded, and rightly soâit was wrong to accuse someone when there was no proof.
She needed proof.
Maybe she wouldnât get any. It was entirely possible that Sadie had left the gate open. It was also possible that somehow the barbed wire had tumbled into the goat pen.
Not likely, but possible.
As for the animalsâ behavior right now, maybe they were just on edge due to the attack on the chickens. Perhaps the raccoons were stalking the yard again, hoping for more easy prey, setting the animals on edge.
She placed her hand on the doorknob, pulled in a breath to steel herself. She wasnât looking forward to heading outside, but she wanted answers. Ezekiel and Sadie needed her, were counting on her to take care of them and to keep them safe.
In order to do that, she needed to know whoâif anyoneâwas targeting the farm.
With one hand firmly gripped around the bat, she eased the front door open. She was grateful her father had always tried to be vigilant when it came to upkeep on the farm. The door didnât squeak, the front porch didnât creak as she made her way down it.
The morning was damp, dreary, the sky still a hazy gray.
She hustled across the yard, darting behind the overgrown lilac bush. Safely ensconced behind the shield of its branches, she began to scan the yard.
