Figure 10.5

At increased angles of incidence (called grazing incidence), a larger percentage of incident light is reflected. This phenomenon explains why the Sun’s reflection in a lake is not particularly bright when the sun is overhead (most of the light is transmitted and very little is reflected) but can be too intense to look at when the Sun is low in the sky and about to set (most of the light at this grazing incidence is reflected from the surface of the water).

EXPLORATION 10.4

Any smooth surface can function as a mirror. The rougher the surface, the less light it will reflect in a coherent manner. Find different flat materials around your house, and hold them under a lamp. Which types of materials form the brightest image in reflection? Which form little or no image? What do these differences tell you about the smoothness of the reflecting surface?
