CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

C ol awoke with a start, confused for a moment. He looked around the strange surroundings, finally realizing where he was - Gillian’s bedchamber. As he came back to his senses, he felt her warm, naked body pressed against his. His arm was draped around her waist, and he held her to him almost protectively.

He smiled as he inhaled the light, floral scent of her hair and body and listened to her even, steady breathing. He looked at the windows and saw that it was still dark out. He figured they were probably in the small hours of the morning, and the first light of dawn was not far off.

Col gently ran his fingers through her hair, relishing the time he had. He had not expected to be lying in bed with her after a night of passion. He had honestly expected her to throw him out. Though he never believed she would turn him over to her father’s men, he had anticipated that she would refuse to speak to him. But it was a risk he had to take.

And the outcome, as it turned out, was far better than he could have imagined in his wildest dreams. Col felt a maelstrom of emotion churning inside him as he lay next to her, the warmth of her body upon his skin. He felt for her in ways he had never felt before, ways he did not know he could feel for somebody.

But as he thought about how much he had come to care for her, a thick sense of melancholy wrapped itself around him for Col knew this was all they had. This was all they would ever have. He knew they could never truly be together. Not in the way he wanted to be. Her father would never allow it, and Col was certain her uncle would kill him if he knew what they had just done.

“What are you thinking about?”

Her voice startled him, but he grinned. He had been so caught up in his thoughts that Col hadn’t realized she had woken. She still lay in front of him, her body pressed to his, and took his hand and pulled it close, gripping it tightly.

“I was just thinkin’ about us,” he said. “And how it’d be nice if this wasnae all there was.”

“I was thinking the same thing,” she said, a note of sadness in her voice.

“I dinnae really talk about me feelin’s,” he said. “But there’s somethin’ about ye that makes me want tae.”

“And what would you say?”

“I’d tell ye how much I care for ye,” he said softly. “I’d tell ye I want tae be with ye.”

Her grip on his hand tightened. “And I, you,” she replied, the sadness in her voice thicker. “And I wish it could be.”

“As dae I, lass,” he said. “As dae I.”

They both fell silent for a long moment, both consumed with their own thoughts. Col leaned down and placed a gentle kiss upon her shoulder. If this was all they had, he was glad he told her how he felt.
