“COURTNEY, are you sure you know what you’re doing?”

“Sort of.”

“This is the weirdest food I’ve ever seen. In fact, I’m not sure it is food. Do you know how many stores I had to go to before I could find quince?”

“It’ll be worth it.”

“What is all this stuff?”

“Aphrodisiacs.”

“No kidding.”

“Nope. Want a taste?”

“Uh, no, ‘cause, I, uh need to go get that stuff from my mom’s storage unit now.”

“Chicken.”

“I’d taste chicken.”

COURTNEY NEEDED the full domestic cooking experience, Brooke felt, so she arranged to be away from the house a good part of Saturday morning. And afternoon.

She got her hair trimmed, and on impulse treated herself to a manicure. After that, she went to the mall and window-shopped. And then she really shopped. The merchants were really pushing Valentine’s Day. Normally, Brooke avoided stores around that day, since not having a Valentine made her cranky. And she still didn’t have a Valentine.

She had Chase. Or no, she didn’t have Chase. They’d made the very mature decision not to have each other.

And, truthfully, Brooke was the tiniest bit miffed that he’d been able to make the decision so easily.

He should have suffered over the decision. She wanted him to suffer. She wanted validation, she wanted him panting at her feet, she wanted…

She wanted all her escaped hormones to go back into deep freeze, that’s what she wanted. It hadn’t been easy to freeze them the first time and they were doing a darned good job of eluding capture this time around.

In the midst of all her internal angst, a dress called to her. She distinctly heard her name. “Brooke!” Or it could have been saying “broke,” which was what she was after buying the red slip dress. It wasn’t even on sale. When was the last time she’d bought something for herself that wasn’t on sale?

Or red? She had no red in her closet and she certainly had no shoes to go with this dress.

This time there was a sale, but since she bought two pairs of shoes, including a pair of completely impractical red high-heeled sandals, she spent just as much money.

It must have been the Valentine’s Day influence. Decorations were everywhere, along with expensive chocolate…and lingerie.

Brooke stopped in front of the potpourri-scented store and stared at the display in the window.

Thongs. Red thongs. Red silk thongs.

All she could think about was her comfortable, but plain, white panties—the kind a mother always wanted her daughter to wear in the event of an unexpected trip to the emergency room. Those were the panties Chase had rescued from his office.

Maybe sexiness wasn’t supposed to be comfortable, Brooke decided after leaving the store with a thong she’d tried on, but bought anyway.

And then she turned around, went back inside and bought the matching cleavage-enhancing bra.

After that, she headed home, afraid she’d buy something else totally and completely un-Brooke-like. The sparkly red heart earrings at the jewelry minicart by the food court for instance.

Food. She’d missed lunch and with Courtney cooking, it wouldn’t be wise to show up hungry for dinner.
