Chapter Eleven

Jim knew within the first fifteen minutes of putting up a fence that he never wanted to do this ever again, but he persisted in the job up until sunset. The only time he took a break was to eat. Other than that, he was helping Tom pound stakes into the ground while Patricia and Erin helped them unravel the wire that went from one stake to another.

By the end of the day, Tom said they were halfway done. Jim couldn’t be sure, but it sounded like Tom was disappointed. Jim couldn’t figure out why. He did want to finish this job before Jim left for Omaha, didn’t he?

Jim ended up putting the matter aside and fell into bed, feeling almost as exhausted as he had on the night he arrived here. His last thought before drifting off to sleep was that he was grateful to have the kind of job where he could sit at a desk and come up with ideas on how to advertise a business. After all of this physical labor, he was looking forward to it. He was even looking forward to mingling with clients. He never thought he’d think that. In Boston, he hadn’t cared for the job. But, looking back, he suspected that what he really hadn’t cared for was the way his father dictated every little thing he did. If his father hadn’t trusted him to do the job, why had he given it to him?

On this night, he didn’t have the dream where Patricia snuck into the bedroom to be with him. Instead, he dreamt of hosting a dinner party with her. The dream did take an unexpected turn when Erin showed up with a cow and told everyone she was going to show them how to milk it. Just as he was telling her she needed to take the cow back to the farm, he woke up.

There was no knocking on the door this time. He heard the crowing of a rooster and some talking from another room as the others were getting ready for the day. He looked at the window with its pink curtains and saw that the sun was just beginning to rise for the day. At least he’d managed to wake up before Tom pounded on the door.

As soon as he sat up in the bed, he realized his entire body was sore. He winced and rubbed his arms. He must have overdone it yesterday with the fence. He didn’t know how he was going to push through the task of completing the fence. Maybe the fact that he had no choice would motivate him.

Ignoring the throbbing pain in his muscles, he got out of bed and dressed for the day. He thought of shaving but decided he’d let the beard grow in for one day. His hands were so sore from gripping that wire that it hurt to hold the razor.

By the time he was ready to leave the room, it sounded like everyone was downstairs, but it turned out that Daisy was in the hall.
