Chapter 11

I sat in the back of our borrowed boat and tried not to puke as we cut through the waves that seemed to be trying to sink us. Gods, I hated open water.

We were moving slowly, still hoping Kai would come to us on her own. She couldn't be too far from the Sirens' island, if she had been doing their dirty work when the spell broke. I rubbed my solar plexus, easing the odd twinge there. I didn't usually feel it there when Hisashi was using his powers, but then, he usually hadn't just been tapped out by someone else draining him.

I glanced toward the bench seat on the other side of the boat, where Hisashi sat with his eyes closed, trying to touch Kai's link to his power, hoping she would feel him through the bond and come looking for us. I noticed Oisin was sticking close to our fox. Maybe the redheaded terror did feel some guilt about how much he'd drained the poor nine-tail after all.

The fae caught me watching them and narrowed his eyes at me. I grinned, knowing he hated that I'd caught him being all clingy and concerned. He rolled his eyes at me and turned back to Hisashi, slipping his arm around the fox's waist and murmuring something that made Hisashi laugh softly without opening his eyes.

Halstad was at the wheel, staring out over the water. I went to join him, gripping the back of his seat as the floor moved and my stomach roiled. Morning sickness—or all-day sickness, in my case—and high sea adventures did not go well together.

"Do you have any idea where you're going?" I asked the mage.

He shrugged. "Not a damned clue. I'm a hired bomb, darlin', not a damned sailor."

I squeezed his shoulder and he sighed, reaching up to cover my hand with one of his own gloved mitts. "We'll find your sea monster, gryphon. Don't get your panties in a twist."

I snorted. "Oh, so now you're interested in my panties."

He shook his head and flicked a glance back at me. "Shut it."

I lifted my hand to ruffle his tangled blond waves. "Aww, little guy's so cute when he's growly."

He didn't justify that with a response. Like he was above it all.

I sighed and dropped down beside him, sitting cross-legged on the floor. It felt better down there, somehow. Like if I couldn't see the water, it didn't exist.

Funny how easy it is to delude yourself so thoroughly.

"I'm trying to stay near the little islands around here, not get too far from the sirens, but stay far enough away that we don't have to deal with 'em." He heaved a massive sigh. "But have you noticed those clouds over there?"

I followed where he was pointing, to a small bank of harmless-looking gray-blue. "Probably just a little shower," I said, stupid as always. "Now whose panties are all twisted?"

He scoffed. "Joke's on you gryphon. I'm not wearing any."

I choked, laughing so hard my chest hurt. "Gods."

He cracked a smile.
