JUNIPER

As Otto and I continued down the path, he kept diligently scanning the forest, making me feel much safer than I had before he'd joined me. "You're a devoted granddaughter, Juniper, undertaking such a perilous journey to care for your grandmother. I hope my grandchildren will be so devoted to me when I'm old."

"It's not perilous. You're here to protect me." I smiled. "And as for your grandchildren, I believe in the old adage that you reap what you sow. My grandmother was always there for me when I was a child, and she taught me what I know about herbs and healing. It's my turn to repay her kindness."

He chuckled. "I see what you mean about my grandchildren. If I'm a good grandfather to them, they will be good to me in turn."

I nodded. "It doesn't always work like that, but mostly it does. People appreciate kindness. I will not forget you keeping me safe on the way to my grandmother's house, and if you ever need my help, I will be happy to repay the favor."

Otto's eyes darted around once more. "I appreciate your faith in me; I am but one man."

"One man who has slain over a dozen wolves in his time."

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to protect the Capello family," he said with pride, and I believed him.

We walked in silence for a few minutes when a loud rustling sound emanated from the whitewood behind us. Otto swiftly unsheathed his daggers, and I followed suit. We spun round to face whoever or whatever had caused the sound.

Silence.

"Stay vigilant, my lady," Otto whispered.

Suddenly the rustling resumed, closer this time.

"Perhaps it's a deer?" I murmured.

"That's no deer," he sneered. "It's that cretin Philemon. I glimpsed his purple tunic."

"Is he still following me?"

"Yeah. I think that I need to teach him a lesson he will not forget anytime soon." He turned to look at me. "It's not far to your grandmother's house from here. I can accompany you there and deal with that pest later, but if it is okay with you, I'd rather go after him now."

"Go," I said without a moment's hesitation. "Just don't rough him up too much. It would upset my mother."

Otto smiled. "Don't worry. I just want to scare the living daylights out of him so he will never dare stalk you again."

"Thank you. That would be a great service to me."

He nodded. "If you climb that hill," he pointed, "your grandmother's house is right at the other edge of the meadow behind it."

It was a shortcut that I was well familiar with, but it was a steep climb, and I wasn't fond of it. But if Otto would feel better about abandoning me if I took it, I would do it for him.

After all, he was going to help rid me of Philemon once and for all, and that was the least I could do to repay the favor.

"Will you meet me at my grandmother's?" I asked.

"After I deal with Philemon Prince.
