Chapter 31

Jon Cameron

11:47 p.m. / Proteus, New York City

It wasn’t working. Just as Cooper had said. Just as Jon had always known. But it didn’t matter, not really, not now. Noctural profits were over $550 million since its release six months prior, exceeding global profits of all Proteus drugs combined during the same period.

Life was unsettlingly quiet at the helm of Proteus. Jon had followed up numerous times with Will, to no avail. He knew better than to make an appearance at Genetech, thanks to an update from Marcus and Rosemary, which relayed that the Feds had taken up a permanent residence in Malcolm’s labs, even with their rightful owner missing in action.

Malcolm was also nonresponsive, but from what Jon had learned, he was about to expire. The great Malcolm Schwartz was rumored to have met his match in the insomnia, ironically something he had managed to conquer his entire life, until now.

Ray and Jaxxson had also failed to return to Proteus despite their declaration of war, not even a phone call to follow up.

Jon should be happy, but his streetwise upbringing had conceived and then honed his sixth sense. When things seemed too good to be true, it meant trouble was lurking around the corner. And you had a limited amount of time to devise a preemptive strike to head it off before it reared its formidable head.

The throne at the top of Jon’s troubles was always occupied by the same individual. The only thing worse than hearing from Khalid was not hearing from Khalid. He had not even called to check in on sales of Noctural, which could be either a very good or a very bad thing, depending on why.

So there Jon stood, still looking down on the rest of the world, isolated, literally, from everyone he should have been in contact with, richer than he could have ever imagined, busy taking into account the very worst of what could possibly happen. But only until he decided upon his next move.

Jon hadn’t come this far to turn back now. He might not have all the intel; he might be left out in the cold, up here in the clouds of his tower, but from up here it mattered little. From up here he could make his own rules, and if they wouldn’t come to him, then he would go to them instead.

Jon’s virtues included neither patience nor contentment. In normal circumstances, he would have been celebrating, but with literally no one to celebrate with due to a pandemic of insomnia that threatened the very existence of humanity, and which he had falsely promised to cure, the fleeting monetary success of his ineffective wonder drug left him dissatisfied and skeptical.

Still alone, staring down on Central Park, where Jon did his best plotting, he decided to travel back in time. He’d go back to his early days. He’d assume Cooper’s position. And with the help of Rosemary and Marcus and the XYZ hybrid Albert—whom Jon knew was seemingly immune to the impacts of insomnia—he himself would resurrect Noctural.
