Chapter Twelve

The shop was small but adequate. It had once been an outlet for discount tickets ranging from zip line adventures to full day sightseeing tours. Angelo screwed the final bracket together and lifted the heavy metal shelving to complete the new wall unit. He had been amazed at the cost of rent for this cubbyhole. It consisted of a ten by twelve front room and a slightly smaller back room for storage. There wasn’t even room for a bed in the rear, so he had purchased a cot to sleep on. His salary would cover a small apartment, but Angelo wanted to save every penny he could for when he would need a larger living space for him and his daughter.

The Shaman had begun shipping boxes of prizes once Angelo sent him a copy of the shop lease. He’d received mainly the low-level stuff and he began arranging items on the new shelving. Part of his duties included promoting the game to curious youngsters. He was well versed in how the app worked. However, making the outpost look attractive to likely game users was his first concern. He rolled out posters and taped them to the inside of the front window. In time he planned on purchasing a neon sign for over the door to replace the wood plaque he’d secured for a few hundred dollars.

He’d positioned a table and chair at the back of the room giving him a clear view of the door whenever he looked up from the laptop. The computer contained the names of local app users with their scores and aptitude ratings. A name would turn red whenever a player earned a reward. Angelo was to enter the date the reward was distributed once the kid came by, along with notes about the player’s age and address. The spreadsheet was particularly sparse, which made him frown. No more than a few dozen or so players in the area and none of them exhibited a special talent for the game.

His first super gamer had won a surfboard and he had followed the instructions carefully. He’d applied solvent to a small section of the board and then waxed the rest. The kid had been too excited about his prize and the spectacular decals Angelo had put on the bottom to notice the defect. Angelo had sent the boy on his way with a slap on the back and a cheerful “you be careful now.”

Angelo made a quick check of the player spreadsheet and then went online to google adoption laws and father’s rights. He jotted down the items he would need and pulled up a screen showing him how to request his daughter’s birth certificate. He wanted everything clear in his mind before he made his move for the girl. He would have every piece of paper ready and a detailed plan on how to exercise his parental rights.

The little bell above the door tinkled and he looked up to see a group of kids walking into the shop.
