Components

The architecture of Kali NetHunter is ingeniously constructed to work in sync with the Android platform while providing an environment suitable for extensive penetration testing. The NetHunter overlay consists of three primary components: a bespoke Android Kernel, a Kali Linux Chroot, and a dedicated NetHunter Android application.

The kernel for NetHunter is a customized version of the Android kernel, tailored specifically to support various features that conventional kernels lack. A core asset of NetHunter, the customized kernel, unlocks a myriad of capabilities. HID support is one of its integral features, allowing NetHunter to emulate a keyboard for host computers. The kernel also provides On-The-Go (OTG) wireless support and CD-ROM emulation. Additionally, many NetHunter kernels offer compatibility with external Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Bluetooth devices and a Y-cable charging feature that permits charging while simultaneously utilizing an external device. Power Android users also benefit from the multi-ROM support incorporated within the kernel, thanks to the KEXEC patch. Finally, the custom kernel houses several patches and fixes to alleviate issues that might arise from external wireless devices.

The Kali Linux chroot serves as the operational nucleus of NetHunter, tweaked specifically to seamlessly meld with the Android ecosystem. Users are given the option to install either a minimal or a full chroot. The minimal chroot, whose size barely crosses 100MB, is a stripped-down Kali OS, an ideal choice for developers or users who prefer a customized installation. Conversely, the full chroot, weighing about 600MB, is fully equipped to interact with the Android application and is popular for most users.

The NetHunter Android application serves as the interaction hub between the user and the Kali Linux chroot. It features a user-friendly GUI, simplifying the management of the Kali Linux chroot. The Android application contains all the configuration files initially copied to the SD card upon the first run. Moreover, it acts as a bootup service, activating the services you opt for when the device starts. This Android application facilitates a more straightforward interaction with preselected applications like MANA, MPC, VNC, DuckHunter, HID attacks, and many more. The most recent versions also incorporate a custom commands builder, enabling users to conveniently add or remove their preferred custom commands to NetHunter.
