Huguenots in France12 suffered significantly; they were marginalised or even prosecuted as this religion was illegal since the King revoked all their rights in 1685. This led to many Huguenots deciding to flee across the channel, and so did De Moivre. The most likely year of De Moivre’s arrival in England was 1687 although some sources suggest he was imprisoned briefly in France, purely for his religious beliefs. He was now in a land where he could express and practise his religion freely, but nonetheless a foreigner, which of course carried a whole different set of difficulties.
