âPearl?â His throat parched, Daniel opened his eyes to a room lined with narrow beds and lit by a single lamp in the corner.
He heard a rustling and turned his head, grimacing at the sharp throbbing the movement cost him, only to see a woman leaning over him with a glass of water. She looked vaguely familiar, a white apron over her dark dress and a white cap atop her honeyed hair, her gaze filled with concern.
âEasy, Mr. Grant. Youâve been sleeping for quite a while. Here, let me help you lift your head so you can take a sip.â
Her voice soothing, she braced her arm behind him so he could drink, which he did, thirstily. Yet it seemed the glass was no sooner at his lips than she set it on the side table while easing his head back down upon the pillow.
âNot too much water at first. Do you remember me? Iâm Molly Davis, Dr. Davisâs wife. Youâre in the infirmary adjoining our home. My husband went to get some sleep, but heâll be back in another hour or so to take my placeââ
âWhereâs Pearl? She was hereâ¦unless I imagined it.â
âNo, she stayed by your side until a few hours ago when Dr. Davis insisted she go home with her grandparents. Sheâs a remarkable young woman, but the shock of everything that happenedâwell, she needed a good nightâs rest. Are you hungry? Would you like to try and eat?â
Daniel shook his head, wincing. His stomach grumbled, but he wasnât thinking of food, only of Pearl.
A memory came flooding back to him of her seated at his bedside and holding his hand so tightlyâor had that been him gripping hers like he would never let her go? Sheâd looked so pale, her eyes filled with tearsâ¦
âSheâs all right, isnât she?â
âYes, but she was so worried about you, not wanting to leave until Mr. McMaster insisted upon itâwe all insisted upon it. My husband examined her first and sheâs healed up well, but she needs to take care with her leg so no problems arise. The leather apparatus that holds her stump is padded, but she must take care not to overdo. She doesnât need any abrasions that might lead to infection. Of course you understand, being a doctor yourselfââ
âPearl told you I was a doctor?â Stunned, Daniel wished now that he hadnât revealed so much to her, but how could he not be truthful when staring into her trusting gaze? When Molly nodded and sighed softly, he realized with a sinking feeling that Pearl must have told them more about him.
âIâm so sorry about your sister, Danielâforgive me, may I call you by your given name? You look to be the age of my son, Seth, so the other sounds so formal. Heâs twenty-five.â
âTwenty-six, and yes, Danielâs fine.â His jaw grown tight at the mere mention of his sister, he looked away. âItâs not something I wish to talk about.â
âI understand, but talking about what happened is the one thing that might help you.
