Chapter 20
Trish
The police sergeantâs words were the balm and the sword, both healing me and stabbing me through my heart.
I gripped Darienâs hand and kept my eyes glued to the dark eyes of the man who, in some ways, held my best friendâs life in his hands.
I was absolutely terrified.
âUnfortunately, based on the GPS we found in the boat, it never made it to Yorba.â
âWhat does that mean?â Darien asked as he leaned forward in his chair.
âIt means that, though the tour was scheduled to go to Yorba, it never arrived on the island.â
I breathed in through my nose and out through my mouth. This didnât make sense. Where was my friend? Where was Lisa?
The officer shrugged, not looking as concerned as I thought he should have. I wanted to reach across the table, grab his collar, and shake him until he realized the seriousness of what was happening.
Instead I took another deep breath and asked, âYou said there was GPS on the boat. Can it tell us where the boat landed?â
âUnfortunately not. The GPS was disabled once the boat passed Yorba.â
I growled. Of course the GPS was disabled. Why wouldnât it have been?
Darienâs hand rose to my back, and he answered before I could. âSo what do we do now?â
âWe continue to investigate and see where the boat went. As of right now, we think it may have gone to one of four islands. Weâre going to send search parties to each of the islands to see if we turn up anything. However, if they never made it to the islandâ¦â
He looked away from me and down at his fingers.
âWe have called in search and rescue teams to search the waters in the area in case anythingâ¦Uhâ¦Comes up.â
It took me a moment to comprehend exactly what the police sergeant said.
He thinks Lisa, my Lisa, is dead.
My heart stopped.
My lungs stopped working.
My brain was in overdrive.
Unable to do anything else, I threw myself into Darienâs arms and sobbed.
If anything happened to Lisa, I didnât know what Iâd do.
I cursed the oysters.
I cursed this trip.
I cursed Chance Gionatti.
I allowed myself to wail for a full minute.
Sixty seconds. Sixty seconds to mourn my friend. Sixty seconds to be frustrated, to drown in sadness and anger and pity. Why was this happening to me? Why did this happen to her?
Darienâs hand made soft circles on my back as he shushed me softly, telling me it would all be okay.
I wish I could believe him.
Though my pulse raced and I could barely breathe, I wiped my nose on a napkin that Darien handed me. I mustâve looked like crap, but didnât care. My friend was out there somewhere. Maybe hurt, alone, or scared. She needed me, and by God did I need her.
I blew my nose one final time, squared my shoulders, and wiped the tears from my face.
âIâm joining the search,â I announced, leaving no room for question.
The police sergeant looked as if heâd been expecting me to say that.
âThe first search party leaves here in two hours,â he said.
