Chapter Ten

The smallest wolf shifted so fast, I didn’t have time to blink as he lunged for me.

I darted backward, behind another pool table and knocked over a beer in the process. The liquid splattered the leg of my pants. All around people started to yell—most cheering the wolves on. Jerks.

Marcus shifted his body between me and the wolf, but it was no use. Two more wolves shifted, snarled at him. For a moment, I wondered if he would shift, but then realized that would be seen as an act of aggression—even if he didn’t initiate. As Marcus wanted El Capucha’s help, he’d do anything not to appear like the aggressor.

My throat constricted. From the looks of it, the bartender and patrons didn’t give a rat’s tail that a fight was breaking out. Most looked enthusiastic over the prospect, leaning over their tables, eyes gleaming—it was probably their favorite form of entertainment. And the man, who I assumed was El Capucha, was watching his peons attack with obvious amusement.

Seven hells, why did we come here?

One of the wolves managed to get around Marcus and lunged for me. More than anything, I did not want to out myself as a fire witch in this crowd. Our powers were too rare, and a criminal like El Capucha would absolutely want to utilize them.

And not for anything good.

So, instead of allowing the fire magic that blazed under my skin free, I twirled out of the wolf’s way and then back again. The moment he landed, my fist found his head, slamming into it. The wolf yelped and looked dazed, which was when I went for the shot that would disarm him.

I punched my fingers into his eyes.

The beast fell to the ground with a whine.

El Capucha let out a bark of laughter and snapped his fingers.

“You two. Go for the man.”

Two more wolves transformed, making me groan. The criminal mastermind probably had a slew of men he could use to fight us, and we were only two people.

Marcus was holding his own against two other wolves, but any more would make fending them off and protecting me impossible. Unless I helped. And, as the shifter El Capucha had just instructed to shift, prowled closer to Marcus, I realized that I didn’t have a choice in the matter. The wolf was huge. He was easily the largest one in the group and was out for blood.

Marcus needed my help.

My fire surged beneath my skin and I called it to the surface. Flames erupted in my hands, turning balls of energy. The onlookers gasped, and I just knew that I’d commanded every eye in the place.

Freaking wonderful.

“Back off him or you’ll find your fur scorched!” I yelled as if defending my friend was my only prerogative and I wasn’t frustrated by giving myself away.

The largest wolf, the one that I was sure would do serious harm to Marcus, didn’t listen. In fact, he leapt.

The moment his feet left the ground, I made good on my threat.
