The key to surviving baby fuss is to remember that it’s okay to hate it. Almost all parents find themselves completely overwhelmed by their baby’s cries at some (or many) points during those first few months. You’re still a great, loving parent even if you acknowledge that inconsolable babies are caretaker torture machines. In most cases, your pediatrician will reassure you that your screaming baby is “safe,” “healthy,” and “normal.” And while there may be nothing “wrong” with your baby, it’s still okay to want to improve the situation. When the screaming ramps up, go ahead and try some of these safe and worthwhile interventions to help your baby calm down. Most important, take care of yourself through this truly challenging time. On my daughter’s peak colicky days I used the money others spend on gas drops and fancy formulas to pay for a babysitter and a manicure. I tag teamed with my husband and as many other caretakers as possible. And if the screaming was just too much, I put her Safe to Sleep in her bassinet for thirty minutes, ignored the cries, and drowsily read a magazine and rested my aching shoulders. I did my best to practice what I preached, knowing that a happy and healthy parent is the most important ingredient in a developing baby’s life.
