For doctors who were not also surgeons Paracelsus had nothing but scorn, and at the beginning of his Great Surgery he added a letter from an Augsburg doctor named Wolfgang Thalhauser, who, like Paracelsus, claimed to be both a regular physician and wound doctor, or surgeon. Thalhauser was blunt: ‘At one time,’ he wrote,

the Romans, for much less reason, threw out all their physicians from the city. If the same authorities were alive now, I dare say they might not suffer any of today’s physicians in the whole empire, for there is no art, no understanding, no order in medicine any longer.23
