Chapter Nine

Bug could barely keep his eyes from rolling as the day manager shouted at him about the stack of apples that had tumbled to the floor. Bug refused to tell Mr. Dresel that the little five-year-old boy hiding behind his mother was the culprit.

For all he knew, the manager would shout at the little boy.

The guy didn’t have a sympathetic bone in his body. Mr. Dresel abused his power as manager every chance he had. He held people’s jobs over their heads, threatening to fire anyone he couldn’t crush under his thumb. He reminded Bug a lot of his father, only human.

So, Bug stood there like an idiot and let the man rant and rave at him.

“Do you always shout at your employees, Mr. Dresel?”

“Sheriff Sparrow,” Mr. Dresel said quickly, his entire demeanor changing from raging lunatic to sweet store manager.

Bug had the urge to smack the man. Only the need to continue being employed kept his hands at his sides. He had a baby to support. He couldn’t afford to be rebellious.

Bug shot the sheriff a quick look through his bangs, wondering if the man was mad at him like the manager was. The sheriff looked intimidating, his arms crossed, a stern expression on his face.

“You didn’t answer my question, Mr. Dresel,” the sheriff said. “Do you always shout at your employees?”

“Oh, well, see, he…”

Bug tuned out the rest of what his manager said when a thick scent hit him like a slap across the face. It was so strong, he couldn’t do anything but inhale until he was saturated in the heady scent. His cock hardened to the point of pain and he suddenly had the urge to strip naked and present himself.

He turned…and had to grab onto the fruit stand to keep on his feet. He had started losing hope that he would ever see his mate again, and yet there the man stood, looking around the grocery store like he had never seen one before.

“Travis.” Bug’s voice broke with huskiness.

The man’s dark green eyes—beautiful eyes Bug saw every day in his son—snapped in his direction. A curious little frown wrinkled his forehead. “Do I know you?”

Bug’s heart shattered right there on the floor of the produce department. He pressed a hand to his chest where he was sure his heart was supposed to be. The ache that stole his breath said it had died a mere second ago.

Or maybe it had died three months ago when his mate left and never came back. He had held out hope for so long, a deep-seated belief that Bear would come back for him.

And apparently, he had been fooling himself this entire time.

“No,” Bug whispered. “You don’t know me.”

Bug forced himself to turn away, walking past the sheriff and his manager toward the back of the store. He needed to clock out and go home, check on TJ.

“Bartholomew,” Mr. Dresel called out when he had just gotten a few steps away from the man, “where are you going? You still have this mess of apples to clean up.
