Chapter 15

Pam’s drive to work was short, but it seemed like it took her forever. Twice she almost ran a red light, and once, she sat at a green light with horns blaring behind her. Pulling into the parking lot, she gave a sigh of relief, thinking that maybe she should just call in sick so she could get her shit together. Fighting with Duncan was the worst. They rarely fought, but when they did, it threw her off in a big way.

This was no different, but on top of everything else going on with Daniel, she doubted she could do her job well, and that just wouldn’t do. Dealing with kids in need, you had to be on top of your game, and she wasn’t.

Glancing at her phone on the passenger seat, she frowned. Pam had hoped Duncan would text, but he hadn’t. She was dying to know if they were there yet. How far did Kenny’s brother live? Kenny never really talked about his past, but then again, neither had she. And who in the hell was his brother? So many questions swarmed her already overworked mind that she felt physically sick.

Making a decision to go in and tell Mitch she needed a personal day, she got out of the car and stopped short. Mitch and Nicole raced out of the building.

“Hey!” Pam called out when they didn’t even notice her.

Nicole stopped briefly to glance her way, then waved her over. “Come on!” Nicole started running again toward Mitch’s SUV. “Get your stuff. Hurry!”

Knowing that whatever was going on was bad, Pam reached for her work bag, then sprinted toward the SUV. Nicole, who was always calm and collected, looked harried and very concerned. Jumping into the back, Pam had barely shut the door before Mitch was backing out of the parking spot. She noticed two other workers, Sally and Clint, rushing out and heading toward Sally’s car.

“What is going on?” Pam leaned forward toward the front, not sure she wanted to know.

Pulling out her phone, Nicole glanced at her briefly before dialing. “Tessa needs our help.”

“What happened?” Pam focused on Mitch, who was driving like a wild man.

“Tessa was doing a wellness check.” Mitch looked at her in the rearview mirror. “It was the last visit before she made her recommendation to release them for full adoption. All her reports on this family were glowing. Tessa had been excited to be letting them know she was recommending that they be allowed to move forward with the adoption.”

“Is this a vampire child or human?” Pam asked with a frown.

“Human,” Mitch replied as he flicked on his blinker to get onto the highway. “Human family, human child. The wife is a middle school teacher, and the husband is an emergency room doctor.”

Pam remained silent, listening. This was what she hated, what most social workers hated about their jobs. No matter how much you think you’ve combed through the pasts of adopting parents, things happen. Who it affected the most was the child, which broke her heart.
