To answer this question, first find the total number of 9th graders by adding the entries in the 9th grade row: 80 + 150 = 230 total 9th graders. Since 80 of those students bring their lunch from home, the probability that a randomly selected 9th grader brings lunch from home is , or around 34.8%. Notice that this is really a conditional probability question: given the condition that a randomly selected student is a 9th grader, what is the probability that the student brings lunch from home?
As in Example 1, you can visualize the conditional probability by restricting the outcomes. Given that the student is in 9th grade, you only need to consider the 9th-grade row in the table to complete your calculation.
