I’ve had a Mirena put in, and I don’t think these women are exaggerating, though not all women experience such debilitating pain. I know how long it takes and how painful it can be, and so I know the level of skill needed for the doctor to do it well. A nurse is required to set up the treatment room for the procedure, and in my case was present throughout. I’m shocked and horrified to learn those two professionals earned the princely sum of $53.55 between them: the practice has to pay both staff members out of that fee. Now I understand why it wasn’t bulk-billed, and I have no regret in paying the gap. Why shouldn’t my GP earn more than that? Her colleagues might have seen three patients in that time. Most consultations are ‘standard’, lasting less than 20 minutes, for which Medicare pays $37.60, so those colleagues could have earnt up to $112.80 in the time I was having my Mirena put in—more than double the rebate for the device insertion—or they could simply have conducted one ‘long’ consultation for which Medicare pays $72.80. I don’t blame GPs who choose not to gain the extra accreditation required to perform this procedure. Where’s the incentive for it?
