Chapter 26
Charlotte
My cheeks still flamed at the memories the next morning. Colt made good on his promise and didnât allow me to leave the room until Iâd climaxed so many times that my legs shook when I tried to walk down the whorehouse stairs and he had to support my weight to make it to the bottom. By that time the roosters had long since crowed and the sun was high above the hills. Never in my life did I imagine Iâd find pleasure in a pirateâs arms.
But heâs not just a pirate, my heart argued. Heâs⦠everything.
Bewilderingly, Colt made me confess to the proprietor, Lady Wick, what a jolly time Iâd had the night before. To further shame me, I was sure of it, though I wasnât sure why he spoke with the madam privately in a little alcove, whilst bidding me to wait alone. I suspected Colt was going to tell the madam about the mix-up, to whisk me from the brothel without trouble, but he acted strangely.
Never having excelled at following orders, I crept along the wall until I could spy on the pair whilst remaining hidden. I frowned as I saw Colt push his bag oâ bits across the table to the proprietor. Was he buying me outright? A hard look flashed across Coltâs face and then I watched him work a sapphire ring from his finger and toss it onto the tabletop.
A small fortune, I thought, watching Lady Wick snatch up the jewel. Colt didnât wear much jewelry and what little Iâd seen had been precious.
Was this for me?
Colt managed a gracious smile and a dip of his head before spinning out of the alcove to collect me. He moved so fast, I hadnât time to re-position myself and a jolt ran through me at Coltâs admonishing scowl.
âYouâll pay for that later,â he warned, dragging me out of the brothel.
The reminder his words brought to mind made my stomach lurch -- not for the threat from Colt, but at what Redhands wanted to do to me once we departed.
Yanking my hand from Coltâs, I shook my head vehemently and declared, âNo. I cannot return to your ship. Not if you plan on sailing anytime soon. Did you forget your bargain with Robert?â
Colt ran a hand down his face, sighing.
âI can handle Robert, but Iâm not in total disagreement with him. Iâm playing your game Charlotte because Iâm hoping youâll grow weary and confess.â
Scowling, I returned, âI play no game, captain, but if I were, surely youâd be playing it because you like what transpired between us last night.â
The captain cocked a brow. âAre you going to dare tell me you did not? Because every whimper, every moan and cry and scream told me something else last night.â
Blushing, I averted my eyes.
Colt sighed again. Reaching out one finger, he lifted the gold locket around my neck, tracing the oval with his thumb.
âListen to me, Charlotte. Nobody cares about my lost bag oâ bits and half of the men are glad you killed Maurice.
