Lorna waded back towards the water’s edge where she collapsed in the shallow water. With each sob, she felt her heartbeat sink down into a darkness of anguish she had felt only once before, and that was when Jeanie walked away from her, them, their magical, unconditional—or so she thought—love. Not even the death of her father evoked such fathomless murk.

Her body responded to the involuntary release of fluids and she wailed out towards the horizon, where if anyone could hear her, they would think an animal was in its final stages of death.

Where all this came from, how it untethered itself from her day-to-day composure, she did not know. She accepted the release and kept with it until she heard the sound of Doreen’s motorcycle coming to life. The growl of the engine and the few short revs before the long drawl of departure made Lorna snap to attention. She croaked out, “Goddamn it! No! Don’t leave. Come back here and hold me. Give me your strength. Who are you?”

Reality took the place of emotional release now. Her current endeavor, her father’s death, and break from her old life settled down around her like a soft blanket. A comforting cloak of warmth, which was the hot afternoon sun beating down on her bare shoulders, to assuage the raw exposed nerve endings. It was life, she reasoned, and in time, the changes do catch up.

She murmured to her fragile heart, “Sometimes it takes something like two good orgasms to unlock the hidden treasures. I read that somewhere in a book.”

She looked up and down the empty stretch of beach. Miles of sand, shells, detritus from human kind scattered about. She then saw something floating lazily towards the beach on the incoming surf and realized it was her underwear.

She cackled in a thick, raw-throated way. Then started to laugh in earnest. “Only me.”

She got up onto her knees and splashed the salty, healing ocean water on her face, through her hair, then tilted her head up to the sun. It caressed her face and she closed her swollen eyes, allowing Mother Nature to kiss her spent emotional reservoir.

She stood up, walked over to her twisted panties, wrung and shook it out, then trudged back to the log to retrieve her clothes. She got them on as best she could and headed slowly back towards the motel.

Tonight, she thought, she would invite Cheenah to join her in getting completely, totally, and unconditionally plastered.
