I work and I wonder. My moments spent alone are the moments I listen to myself—myself as a person and as a woman. I try to see how people see me. I am not a ‘good’ woman to most people. I often overhear whisperings: “What is a married woman who is also a mother doing at her parents’ house? Why has she been here for over five years? Her husband must have left her for good. See how unorganized her home is. She still doesn’t cook any meals at home. She is a worthless woman, Alakshmi (the negative counterpart of the Hindu Goddess of wealth Lakshmi).”
