The room is packed with people who all fall quiet and turn to stare at me as I stand in the doorway. My eyes flicker around the room searching their faces, and it only takes me a second to realize I’m looking for anyone with skin and hair similar to my own. I find none.

Strange.

Even stranger is the one person who doesn’t seem interested in my entrance at all.

My father.

His attention is on the metallic plate set before him; a frown etched into his features.

“The girl is here, let us eat” my father says, his voice low but still heard easily from across the room.

Everyone takes his or her seat in a matter of seconds, and I’m left standing awkwardly wondering where I’m supposed to go. There are several empty chairs placed at odd intervals around the table. Should I just slip into one and claim it as mine?

Suddenly I see another recognizable face.

Wolf.

I smile softly at him, but his eyes are sharp and unkind in the way they stare at me. He offers me no hint as to what I should do next.

Great. I had thought from our earlier encounters that we were starting to become friends; I guess I was wrong about that.

“Scarlett,” my father says, his voice has an edge to it that makes my eyes instantly snap to him. He’s watching me through narrowed eyes, seemly unamused at the scene I seem to be making.

“Yes, father?”

“Would you do us the great honor of taking your seat?” he growls, his words more of a command than a question. “You’ve already made far too much of a spectacle of yourself arriving late and wearing … that. Did you deem the outfit I sent up for you not to be good enough for you?”

My face flushes hot at this as all eyes in the room turn to look at me, waiting for my answer with baited breath.

“No, father,” I whisper.

“Speak up, girl!”

“No, father,” I say, louder this time. “I’m sorry, father. I just … I didn’t see the outfit before it was too late to change.”

Arsenio glares at me for a moment longer before impatiently nodding toward an empty chair to his left. Right. How stupid could I be? Of course, he’d place me next to him.

I make my way to my chair and slip into it, doing my best to ignore the eyes still on me.

As soon as my butt hits the cushion, three men in butler uniforms appear with carts loaded with platters of the most decadent food I’ve ever seen. My mouth waters as they begin to serve, starting with my father and then the other guests. It isn’t long before everyone’s attention is turned toward their plates.

The entire table is served while I continue to wait for my own plate of food, but it never comes. The butlers disappear and quiet conversations begin, tinged with the tinkling of cutlery as my father starts eating.

“Um, excuse me, father,” I say quietly, uncomfortable at the idea of drawing his attention back to me, but unwilling to go without dinner.
