“How is she?” I ask Tia before she is through the door. I have been sitting on this window seat for hours, waiting for her to finally come so I can make sure they didn’t punish Fanny for getting justice. Felix never came to bed, so I couldn’t ask him.

“She is safe.” She places the tray of food down and sits without looking at me. Maybe I have scared her off, too. I wanted that in the beginning, but now I need her. At least… I am telling myself that is the reason for the tightness in my chest.

“In the dungeon?” I scoff.

“No, in the castle housing. No one knows what you two did yesterday. It has all been taken care of.”

“Why?” I say, raising a brow.

“Because Victor was an ass and deserved what he got.” She piles her plate with food as if she didn’t drop significant news.

“But he was Keryth…”

“What does that have to do with anything?” Her deep brown eyes finally meet mine, burning brightly, daring me to challenge her. I could. But does this mean…does this mean that she may be on my side? First, the fields of food for the Forsaken and Reckless, and now this?

“Ok…”

“Ok,” she says, ending the conversation. “You are going to be angry, but there is nothing any of us can do about it. The Queen’s Birthday Ball is tonight. And as you know, the king has demanded Felix bring you.”

“Ugh. I forgot,” I groan, throwing myself into the chair across from Tia.

“I figured. And I didn’t expect Felix to remind you. We need to get you a dre—”

“I have the perfect one!” Kaelin says, bursting into the room carrying a huge bag in her arms. “I am so excited. As soon as I heard you were demanded to be at the ball, I went straight to the different seamstresses and dug through their designs until I found the perfect one!” She is so proud of herself that I can’t come up with any kind of barb that could wipe that smile off her face. And I don’t know if I want to. What is wrong with me?

“Well, don’t keep us waiting!” Tia rubs her hands together and turns to face her sister to get an unobstructed view.

“I thought you would never ask!” Kaelin squeals. Her tiny hands fly quickly over the garment bag. “I know this it isn’t your favorite color, but it will look so good with your pale skin. I also got you shoes to match. You are going to look stunning in this. Oh, also, I brought some more dye. We may need to touch up your roots.” She finally frees the massive amount of flowy, deep red fabric and turns to face us.

It has layers of fabric lined with jewels and ruffles, making it hard to see which part is what.

“Kaelin…” is all I can get out around the lump in my throat. She went through all this trouble to find something I would love, even though she didn’t have to.
