Chapter 12

Eden jerked upright in her bed. She let out a soft breath. Her senses were screaming a warning at her. It was just like the time her mom’s creepy boyfriend snuck into her room when she was fifteen and tried to get in her bed.

Her pulse was racing, her hands clammy, and every muscle was tense in expectation that she’d have to fight or flee.

Eden remained still, simply listening, trying to figure out what had yanked her awake.

Her gaze slid around the room. It was surprisingly dark. It wasn’t your usual dark of night time. None of the devices were glowing, and there was an intense inky blackness surrounding her. Had there been a power cut?

Eden slid out of bed and padded to the window in her sleep shorts and tank top. It was the same outside. There wasn’t a single light on in the whole place.

Maybe something had taken out the power. But the place ran on stored thermo energy and solar power. It would take a lot to knock out both systems.

There was a flash of light in the gloom.

Eden squinted, her pulse kicking up a gear. That looked like gunfire.

There was another flash. Crap. It was exactly that.

She grabbed her wrist comm. “Blaze, are you awake? There’s something weird going on in the sanctuary.”

She waited a few seconds, but there was no reply.

Eden looked out the window again. Blaze was probably asleep in the medical center. She didn’t want to shove him into a fight before he was ready.

“Blaze, it’s Eden. I’m heading to the west wing of the sanctuary. I think I saw gunfire. I want to make sure everything is okay over there.” She shoved her feet into her boots, grabbed her weapon, and raced out of the room.

Eden dashed along the corridor, her gun raised, looking for signs of trouble.

The place was eerily silent. She reached an external door and eased it open before stepping into the gloom and heading along a path.

Now she was outside, there was no mistaking the sound of gunfire. She headed in the direction of the shots.

As she got nearer, she could make out muffled voices.

Eden crouched low, angling in on the direction the voices were coming from. Then she tracked them.

She picked out at least four different voices, all male. Mixed in with them were the sounds of animals in distress.

She reached the main complex of the west wing. Torch lights were flashing around, and people were walking about, scraping things along the floor.

Eden inched closer until she could peer in a window. She sucked in a deep breath as she counted a dozen Pecket moving animal pens outside.

Hell, no! They weren’t taking these animals.

She ducked down and tried to reach Blaze again. “You need to get out here. The sanctuary is under attack. The animals are being taken.”

There was still no reply over her wrist comm.

She hooked into the sanctuary’s communication network. “Computer, link me up with Jendar.”

There was no response.

“Computer, link me up with anyone who’s active in the sanctuary.
