Chapter Five: “Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver and the other’s gold…”

Iliana groaned as her alarm screeched into the morning silence. Don’t wanna wake up. She slapped the offending object and rolled over onto her back. Despite nearly eight hours of sleep, her body insisted she hadn’t gotten enough.

Three weeks of grueling film schedule had worn her out and she woke up tired. Her arm had healed for the most part with the medical staff keeping an eye on it, but it remained tender. At least they were done with most of the outdoor snow shots. Dan had pushed them hard while the weather cooperated. With a shift toward warmer temperatures, the snow had disappeared and Iliana hoped they’d gotten all they needed.

She rolled over to look out the window. The sun crested the trees and painted the northern fields with golden light. The local group of kangaroos meandered across the expanse, mixing with the horses. She’d seen a few wallabies, but the kangaroos had been more common at the cattle station.

At least it’s going to be a nice day. She swung her feet to the floor and headed to the bathroom to start her day. A smile curled her lips as she paused at the desk. She’d taken Taggart’s advice and started writing letters to Brandon. A voice in the back of her head remarked she was crazy to think they’d ever get to him. What, haven’t you ever heard of the Inter-Dimensional Mail? She snorted and shook her head at her whimsy, but it hadn’t stopped her from writing down her thoughts to Brandon. He’s real and I’ll get back to him somehow. She had no plan on how to do it, but her gut said she would.

Iliana found the door to Taggart’s room open and shot a look at her costar. He lay with the sheets tangled around his waist, snoring to beat the band. She smiled and closed the door behind her, wishing she could sleep more. Instead, she threw herself into the shower to wash away her fatigue.

As she returned to her bedroom, rubbing a towel over her head, her foot snagged the strap to her backpack and she stumbled over it. How’d it get in the middle of the room? She dropped the towel on the chair and crouched beside her dusty nylon pack. The large zippered pocket sat open and something leathery stuck out over the toothed edge.

She picked up the pack and sat down on the bed with it in her lap. The fine sand dust sprinkled her yoga pants as she rifled through the contents. She pulled out a water bottle, her first aid kit, and the curious package of leather.

Holy shit, that looks like…

Her knives and the belt. How had this gotten in here? She hadn’t been wearing the knives the day she left Ros Torach, and she hadn’t seen them in the pack when she’d repacked it for her trip to Australia.

But they’re here now.

She unrolled the belt with the little knives and admired the tooling in the leather.
