CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Getting to Know Her
T hat year we stored the early grains in our storage buildings that sat half under the ground to help them stay cool in the heat of the growing times. Amina, Edna, and Basya helped me in preserving the fruits and vegetables as they ripened. These, too, were stored in storage buildings.
“Why are we storing so much food?” Edna asked as we carried more grain into the storehouse.
“Have you not heard?” Amina asked her. “Noah has prophesied the end of life in this world. That is why he is building the ark.”
“Yes. I know he is building an ark to preserve the life of the species. But why are we storing so much food? We will not be here to eat it.”
“But whoever goes on the ark will need food to eat while the earth is flooded. They cannot grow food on the ark.” Basya moved another basket to a shelf.
“Whoever? Do you not think we will go on the ark?” Edna asked.
“I do not know. I have no reason to think I will be included.” Basya glanced away from the others. “I am a daughter of Cain. Why would I be included?”
“But you love Jehovah as we do,” Amina argued. “Why would you not go?”
She lifted a shoulder. “I have not been invited.”
“None of us have been invited,” I said. “I doubt Noah will tell any of us that until the ark is closer to being finished. They still have much work to do, and many more logs of the gopher wood to cut and drag home.”
“This is true,” Amina said. “If you were Ham’s wife, Basya, you would be more certain of a place on the ark.”
“If?” Basya said. “Would you accept me as his wife? I am different from all of you. I carry the mark of Cain.” She bit her lip.
“If Ham decides you are the right woman for him, we would accept it,” I said. “You have shown how much you love Jehovah in the time you have been with us. Your belief and obedience are more sincere than either Nirit or Channa pretended to have.”
“You would accept me into your family?” Basya asked.
“I would.”
“We would,” Amina and Edna chorused.
“We have wondered for many months why you had not accepted him.”
“He has not asked me for some time. I have asked Jehovah for an answer. He has not shared his thoughts with me.”
“Have you thought on it and made your own decision before taking it to Him?” Amina asked.
I swallowed the same question, glad that Amina had suggested it.
Basya stared up at Amina, then glanced at me. “I have been waiting to hear from Jehovah. Must I make a decision first. What if I am wrong?”
“You must make a tentative decision and take it to Him. He will reinforce your decision or let you know it is wrong,” Edna said. “Have you not made big decisions like this before?”
“Nothing so big as marrying Ham. He is such a good man, and … and he is your son, Imma, and Noah’s.
