Chapter Thirteen
Dani didn’t have much time during the following weeks to brood about her place in Brand’s life. Between his practices, weekend games, and therapy sessions with the trainers, his days were full. Dani found herself driving most of the time, playing chauffeur to Dave, running around town, doing things with others of the Marlins’
wives. When she had a spare minute, she made small changes around the condo, took care of little details Brand apparently hadn’t cared about when he’d lived there alone.
After the third regular season game, Dani and Brand had filmed a commercial together. It was fun. They paid her, real money. That made her feel good, even though she’d already spent most of her check buying some of the stuff they paid Brand and her to endorse.
She hadn’t been able to resist after getting a look at him stretched out naked over a patterned sheet, one of the coordinating towels draped artfully across his lower torso.
Those sheets and towels ought to sell like hot cakes when the ads hit national TV.
All she’d had to do was walk onto the set wearing a modest, satin robe in a color chosen to coordinate with the bedding. Then she sat beside Brand and laid a hand on his washboard abs. She’d been shocked when, a week after they’d filmed the ad, Brand’s agent had called her and asked if she’d be willing to appear in another ad with Brand.
This Friday morning, she was feeling lazy. Brand had left this morning for the airport. He wouldn’t be home until late Sunday night, after a game with the Rangers out in Los Angeles. Already she missed him. She wandered outside, crunched through a carpet of fallen leaves as she walked toward the lake. Birds chirped from trees that still held autumn leaves. A strong, clean breeze tossed her hair, pushed water gently against the dock.
Dani loved it here. Loved Milwaukee. She was getting acquainted with Brand’s teammates and their families, growing more confident every day. Dave was happy with his school, in spite of the tutoring the headmaster had just told them he still needed.
Dani wished they could live here permanently, the way Josh and Elaine did.
The idea of going back to Georgia, spending the off-season so close to her and Brand’s home town, still gave her occasional nightmares. Brand had promised they would live out in the country, not right in Carendon. They wouldn’t go at all, he’d said, until she felt ready to face the past. Although she told herself she had no reason at all to worry and reminded herself she’d vowed to overcome the pangs of insecurity, worry still plagued her.
“Mrs. Carendon. Phone for you.”

Dani got up, came back inside. Anxious to hear Brand’s voice, she hurried to take the phone from Mrs. Blair.
“It’s Mr. Carendon’s mother.” The housekeeper looked frazzled. “She asked to speak to you when I said he wasn’t here.”
Dani stared at the phone. The innocuous pale gray instrument took on fearsome characteristics. Forcing her hand to stop shaking, she took the phone, brought it to her ear.
