Chapter 10
Otto
âI thought they were on their way back,â I muttered, looking up at the clock.
Weâd been sitting in my parentsâ kitchen, drinking beer and killing time for the last hour. Thankfully, all of us boys knew how to cook and dinner was warming on the stove, because the women were a lot later than they said theyâd be.
âTalked to Bishop not fifteen minutes ago, and he said theyâre fine,â my dad replied easily. âDonât get your panties in a twist.â
âNot sure why we didnât send a member with them,â I muttered. âBishopâs a fuckinâ civilian.â
âBishopâs family,â my dad countered, flicking his beer cap at me. âAnd we didnât want a member out with them, callinâ attention to the group.â
âYeah, yeah.â
âYouâre such a worrywart,â Rumi joked, leaning back in his chair. âTheyâre fine.â
Iâd understood why theyâd chosen to go shopping immediately. They were trying to distract my bride from all the shit that was happening behind the scenes, with the added bonus of getting to know her and delicately getting information from her without her realizing it. That didnât mean that I was stoked theyâd been gone all fucking day.
âEstherâs probably fuckinâ exhausted,â I argued. âSheâs had a hell of a day.â
âUnderstatement,â my dad murmured. âPoor thing.â
âYouâre really gonna marry her, huh?â Rumi asked seriously.
âIâm really gonna marry her,â I confirmed.
âWhy?â
The question hit me right in the solar plexus and it was on the tip of my tongue to tell him that Iâd been ordered to, but I couldnât get the words out. Sometime between when Iâd been kicked in the balls with the order to marry Esther and sitting down at my parentsâ table, something had changed.
It wasnât like I had some burning desire to marry Esther, far from it. But I also didnât want people to think that I was being forced into it. She didnât deserve that. When sheâd stood surrounded by women that morning but looked at me for reassurance, Iâd suddenly realized that it was me and her now. Somehow, weâd become a team.
I could think of worse things.
âWeâre havinâ a baby,â I replied blandly.
âYou donât have to get married just because youâre havinâ a kid.â
âYouâve met Esther.â I shrugged. She wasnât the type to shack up with someone without being married.
âStillââ
âYour brotherâs made his decision,â my dad interrupted. He knew about the order. âLeave it alone.â
âShe wonât fuck you again unless youâre married,â Rumi said, pointing at me. âThatâs it, right?â
I was out of my chair before I even realized that I was moving.
âRumi,â my dad roared, his hand slapping against my chest.
âSorry,â Rumi muttered, his hands held up in surrender as he stared wide-eyed. âI was jokinâ.â
âYou want me jokinâ about Nova?â I asked through gritted teeth. My dadâs hand was still pressed against my chest like he wasnât sure if he was going to have to hold me back or not. âI mean, didnât she start hookinâ up with you because you were both drunk?â
Rumiâs expression darkened, but he stayed in his seat.
