Judge Ord

Judge Ord of Seal Beach also recalls this trench and says that they used fresnos (a wide scoop scraper) to fill it in. That it also seemed poor military strategy to have the trench so far back from the ocean.

Mrs. Martha Wardlow

Martha E. Wardlow, Santa Ana, came to California with her two brothers from Burlington, Kansas, in 1875, and located at Downey. She and her husband Robert B. Wardlow removed to the Bixby Ranch about 1878.

Mrs. Wardlow says that many of the squatters on the Stearns Ranch bought land and located on the Bixby Ranch after they had been evicted from the Stearns property.

She remembers the trench on the Bixby Hill which she was told had been thrown up by the American forces during the Mexican War but thinks it had been leveled off and all traces of it destroyed.
